The University of Chicago—or "Grey City"—was emerging simultaneously with and in close proximity to the the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition—the White City—on the south side of Chicago in the late 19th century. Sometimes considered Chicago's "twin progeny," these two "cities" were instrumental in changing the perception of Chicago from a city of barbarous materialism to one of refinement and culture.
